Up Front Costs:
After finding a location where you will be housing your Bird. A cage will be needed. Knowing that you and your bird
will have a long and happy life together. You may want to think of investing in a nice cage that will match the
furnishings of your home. This cage will be like a permanent fixture.
Advantages to buying your cage and bird at the same time from a breeder. Lots of times you will get great discounts
on you total purchase. You should ask if they give discounts on total set - up purchase.
You may want to invest in a seed guard for you cage to keep the floor around the cage clean.
A cover for the cage is a good idea so that you can cover the cage at night so the bird gets a good night sleep. It is
also good to be able to cover the cage during the day if your bird gets loud ( only for very short times to teach to not
be loud ). It will allow for your bird to take a nap during the day when your bird gets cranky and loud.
A Play Gym is Always good for having so your bird can get exercise while out of its cage.
A cage cover and cage seed guard are items that can make life a little easier on you with your bird. The cover will
quite your bird down at night and the seed guard will make your clean up a lot more simple for you.
Toys ( Mirrors, Ladders, Bells, Swings, lots of toys) birds love toys. Birds love Mirrors.
The cost of your bird
A Well Bird Check Up. This is recommended when you first get your bird weather its from a breeder or a pet store.
This will insure that your bird is healthy and it will get you introduced to your vet. So if anything in the future goes
wrong you will know where to take your bird. Not all vets. Care for birds so its best to find one that does before you
need to use one.
On Going Costs:
Feed - Mixed Seeds, Fresh Fruits and Vegetables.
We also feed our babies Mazuri Pellets. This is optional, although feeding your birds pellets are very good for them
and are a complete diet. Feeding your birds pellet is a lot less waste and mess.
Vitamin drops, cuttle bones, and mineral blocks. Cockatiels do not receive or have access to all the nutrients that
they get in the wild so they need to have vitamins and minerals supplemented.
Clipped Wings - You should have your birds wings clipped about every 6 months. This will keep your bird from
flying into things and getting hurt. Also, can prevent your bird from getting out and losing him/her.
Bird Treats - Birds love to get treats.
Unexpected Costs:
Medical Expenses - Should your bird get sick or have an accident and hurt itself, You will need to get your bird
medical attention from an avian vet. Signs & Symptoms

You usually get an exceptionally good price.
The bird(s) you get from a breeder are less stressed and usually more hardy, happy, lovable birds.
Breeders usually will take in your bird for a trade in for a larger and/or different type of bird. You will be assured that
your bird that you trade in will be taken excellent care of. Breeders take well care of their breeding birds.

Training Your Bird:
It is best to buy your bird(s) at a young age so that you create the behaviors that you want your bird to have.
The first training should be to teach your bird to step up on command.
Teach your bird to stay in its cage and play pen. To only leave these areas when you have it step up on you. A
flighty or wondering bird can get seriously injured.
Teaching your bird to talk is fun and can be done by saying words or phrases over and over. You can also
purchase CD's that repeat word that help your bird learn words.
In training your bird never hit your bird as punishment you can seriously injure your bird and it could die. Birds
respond to positive reinforcement. They will do things for you to receive treats, and positive attention from their
owner.
Consistency and Patience are what is needed to train a bird.
