When you buy a new bird the first thing you should do is set an appointment with an avian Veterinarian to have a "well
bird check up exam". This will give you the opportunity to locate an avian and get to know your Veterinarian. You should
find one that is friendly and willing to take the time to answer questions for. The should have a 24 hour emergency hot line
and in case of an emergency they will be there for you.
The first 24 hours of bringing your new bird home is the most important. You should monitor the bird to make
sure that your bird is eating and drinking. The move from the breeder or pet store to your home can be a shock.
This is  very stressful on your bird. If you find that your bird is not eating or drinking. Your bird needs to have
water,
this is very important. You can take a spray bottle of room temperature water and put it on mist. Mist your
bird with the bottle just enough to wet down its feathers. The bird will naturally clean its feathers and in doing so it
will taken the water that it needs. If you find that your bird is still not eating or drinking on its own and you have
done everything to help prevent stress. You should contact your local vet and the breeder or pet store where you
purchased your bird. You may want to do this anyway for peace of mind.
When bringing your Bird home from the breeder or pet store your bird will have some stressed issues. He/She has
been taken to a new home with a new family and surroundings. The stress could affect your birds eating habits.
Be sure to inquire what the breeder or pet store has been feeding your new bird. You should purchase a weeks
worth of food from the breeder or pet store. Birds Of All Colors provides you with a weeks worth of feed for your
bird. You need to then Purchase feed that you plan on feeding your bird. Then you need to leave your bird on the
food that you bought / received from the breeder or pet store for 2 days. Then after the second day mix the feed
75% Breeder or pet store feed to 25% your choice of feed. Every day there after slowly increase your choice of
feed until The Breeder or pet store feed is gone. This should allow your bird to adjust to the new home and your
family with less stress and a happier bird.
Sneezing or wheezing:

Caused by an upper respiratory infection, a cold,  possibly dust, or other airborne particles. If your birds nostrils
become inflamed, red, or runny this is a serious concern and you should call your vet.

Diarrhea or wet droppings:

runny droppings or wet droppings can be due to a change in the birds diet or stress. This can cause dehydration
which can result in death if not taken care of soon enough.

Weight Loss:

You Should Weigh your bird at the same time each day for 3 days to establish an average weight of your bird. If you
find that you bird has a 10% weight loss it should be taken in to the vet for a check up. If you have not weighed your
bird prior and you notice a weight loss. Take your fingers and rub across the breast of your bird if it is not round but a
V-shape you need to take your bird to a vet.

Reduced Appetite:

Birds have extremely high metabolisms, It is vital that they receive nutrition every day. If your bird stops eating and
begins to loose weight, it may be a sign of intestinal blockage, or impaction which could result in death very quickly
without medical attention.

Ruffled Feathers:

If your bird sits on its perch with its feathers ruffled. This could be a respiratory problem
or another disorder. This also hides weight loss. You will need to place your bird in a
warm place and consult with your vet.

Cloudy Eyes:

If your birds eyes look cloudy or have a discharge coming from them, it may be affected
by a respiratory, nervous, or muscular disorder. Your bird will need immediate treatment
from a vet.
